Knowing the Basics of Powder Coating

Powder coating is defined as a surface layer applied in the form of a free-flowing and dry powder. Unlike conventional liquid paint, it does not need a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form.

It is applied electrostatically before being cured under the heat of the sun. The latter process will cause the coating to form a protective skin. The result is a hard finish, one that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is used on aluminium extrusions as well as automobile and bicycle parts.

Using this type of material is advantageous for a number of reasons. First, it emits zero or near zero volatile compounds. Second, coating overspray can be recycled. Third, its production lines produce less hazardous waste than its liquid counterparts. Fourth, the capital equipment and operating costs for a powder line are generally less than conventional liquid lines. Finally, a wide range of specialty effects can be easily accomplished through powder coating; something that would be virtually impossible with other similar processes.

Powder coatings are divided into two main categories - thermosets and thermoplastics. The thermosetting variety includes a cross-linker in its formulation. During the baking process, it reacts with other chemical groups in powder polymer. This then increases the molecular weight and improves the performance properties. Thermoplastics, on the other hand, do not go through any additional reactions when baked. Instead, it flows out directly into the final coating.
